The Internet as an up-to-date means of communication is strongly emerging but without having a negative impact on conventional printing processes. This new electronic means of communication is still in the initial stages and will certainly extend its market position. The classical printing technologies will similarly consolidate their positions and continue to develop. Production speeds will increase and new press configurations will require modified pressroom products.

| In newspaper printing the change to offset printing has recently been completed to a large extent. In the future the aim will be to reduce costs as far as possible. For this purpose waste has to be reduced and pressroom products like paper, printing inks, fountain solutions, printing aids, cleaning and maintenance products have to be perfectly adapted to the printing process. |
| New developments such as digital printing technologies and waterless offset printing will gain niche positions but will not substitute the classical offset process. In rotary printing the waterless process will remain an exception. Since the printing industry suffers from cost pressure and overcapacity, only specialised printers will be able to afford investments in such sophisticated and expensive printing technologies. |
